Pi Day (3/14) is a big deal at Ashleigh's new middle school. We completely underestimated how big it really was. It was another one of those learning experiences that will benefit the next kiddo coming up the ranks. We will be better prepared when it is Owen's turn. Students wore head to toe costumes complete with body and hair paint. Several students spray painted their entire bodies. It was just a little nuts to say the least. Parents sent in dozens and dozens of pie for the students to celebrate with. Ashleigh said she ate 3 pieces herself and could have had more if she wasn't stuffed. We sent in this French Silk pie from Hy-Vee and discovered it is the best chocolate pie we have ever had!! There were no classes the entire day. Instead they played Olympic games and skits in honor of Greek mythology which is a big social studies unit in sixth grade. They also watched a movie after stuffing themselves with pie. It was a glorious day for Ashleigh.
It was also the last day before spring break, so at the end of the day every student, teacher, and staff member started counting down to the bell the last 10 seconds of school. Ashleigh said everyone (including teachers) screamed 10, 9, 8... at the the top of their lungs, even in the library where she was, and then took off running out of the building when the bell rang. It was the craziest thing to see...hundreds of kids sprinting out of the building at the same time like they were running a race or running from a fire. I'm just grateful Ashleigh wasn't trampled since she was kind of in awe at the whole situation.
